Dangers of Energy Drinks

Over consumption of caffeine and other energy producing ingredients found in energy drinks such as taurine can lead to health issues.

Recently, a South Carolina high school student collapsed and died after consuming a very high dose of caffeine in a short time: coffee, soft drinks, and an energy drink. The coroner reported that the student died from a caffeine induced lethal cardiac arrhythmia.

Safety

Large amounts of caffeine may cause serious heart and blood vessel problems such as heart rhythm disturbances and increases in heart rate and blood pressure. Caffeine also may harm a child’s still developing cardiovascular and nervous systems.

Caffeine use may also be associated with anxiety, sleep problems, digestive problems, and dehydration.

Guarana, commonly included in energy drinks, contains caffeine. Therefore, the addition of guarana increases the drink’s total caffeine content.

People who combine caffeinated drinks with alcohol may not be able to tell how intoxicated they are. They may feel less intoxicated than they would if they had not consumed caffeine, but their motor coordination and reaction time may be just as impaired.

Excessive energy drink consumption may disrupt sleep patterns and may be associated with increased risk-taking behavior.

A single 16-oz. container of energy drink may contain 54 to 62 grams of added sugar; this exceeds the maximum amount of added sugar recommended for an entire day.

Employee Spotlight

Employee in spotlight this month : Abegail Basa - Regional Proposal Manager

Get to know her and her journey with EllisDon a little better.

Q. Tell us a little bit about yourself, your career with EllisDon so far, and the project you’re currently working on.

For nearly 18 years with EllisDon, the experience has been much more than a workplace as it has been a journey of transformation, filled with growth and meaningful encounters. What started as a brief assignment in Dubai quickly turned into a series of significant milestones that have not only shaped my career but also deeply influenced my personal development. Starting at the Jumeirah Village Project’s site office, the early days were challenging, especially during the tough period in 2008. Nevertheless, my role has evolved, from handling office administration, recruitment and HR tasks to eventually finding my way into proposals, which has allowed me to grow significantly in my professional capabilities. I’ve seen EllisDon grow from fewer than 100 employees to around 400 at present, and we continue to expand. That is why the reason I’ve stayed with EllisDon goes beyond loyalty; it’s the incredible people I have the privilege to work with and the supportive environment the company fosters.

It feels less like a job and more like a true partnership, one that I am proud and honored to be a part of.

Q. When you’re not working, you can be found…

When I’m not working, you’ll often find me shopping, traveling and discovering new destinations. I have a keen appreciation for photography and a real enjoyment of baking, though these days I focus more on immersing myself in diverse cultures, exploring both international and local cuisines, and enjoying the small joys of life. So if you’re looking for travel recommendations, Palawan and Boracay in the Philippines offer stunning beaches and vibrant local experiences, while Siargao is a must-visit for surfing enthusiasts.

Q. What sets EllisDon apart from the other companies you have worked for?

We, at EllisDon, treat each other like family rather than colleagues. I’ve stayed with EllisDon much longer than initially planned. What began as a short-term position has turned into a long-term commitment due to the exceptional environment. EllisDon is a people-oriented company with a strong focus on the well-being of the employees. Further, the company excels not only in offering professional opportunities but also in actively supporting charitable causes and fundraising efforts.

Q. What inspired you to be in this field?

My inspiration for this field stems from my detail-oriented nature and commitment to deadlines, combined with my passion for interacting with people and helping them succeed. Winning projects and building relationships have been deeply fulfilling. However, the real driving force for me is the influence of great leaders. Those who lead by example and spark enthusiasm in their teams inspire me to strive for excellence and make a meaningful difference.

Q. Any challenges or key learnings you would like to share?

One key learning from my journey is the importance of speaking up. Sharing your ideas is crucial—whether they succeed or not, it’s worth trying. Throughout challenges, like tight deadlines and demanding clients, focus on the present moment. My passion comes from understanding that compassion and clear communication can drive progress and overcome obstacles.

Q. What do you think are the most important traits for an employee to be successful at EllisDon?

At EllisDon, dedication, flexibility, positive mindset and willingness to learn are key to success. The ability to share ideas and the mindset of “every action counts” are also key. These are not hard to practice as despite being in a male-dominated industry, EllisDon fosters an inclusive culture where everyone is treated as equals and valued.
