WHAT SKILLS DO YOU HAVE OR NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL?

KIERAN HAWE

A PHILOSOPHY ON LEADERSHIP

EllisDon’s CEO, Kieran Hawe, articulates that his leadership philosophy is centered on making himself redundant. He emphasizes the importance for leaders to recognize and comprehend their team’s current leadership capabilities. He advocates for coaching, mentoring, and providing the necessary tools to enable team members to realize their leadership potential.

Additionally, he highlights that an essential aspect of exemplary leadership is the ability to relinquish control and trust others to undertake portions of one’s responsibilities. The capacity to delegate and share responsibilities not only empowers individuals but also drives the pursuit of results.

DAVID McFARLANE

DELIVERING GREAT CAREERS TO EACH OTHER

David McFarlene highlights the shift in his leadership approach, influenced by Kieran, towards mentoring and supporting career development. He underscores the value of being a sounding board, navigating challenges, and fostering reflective opportunities. They both share a mentorship experience that taught them to embrace and encourage the growth of aspiring individuals, viewing it as a testament to their success in nurturing talent.

COACHING

A SHIFT IN PERSPECTIVE: TEACHING VS LEARNING

Teaching is the act of disseminating information. It centers on the actions of the ‘teacher’ role. Learning is the act of experiencing, understanding and replicating. It centers the actions of ‘learner’ role.

An instructor can teach you to fold an origami crane step by step, resulting in a completed crane. However, true learning is shown by your ability to recreate the crane independently after the lesson. Effective learning requires understanding and replication, with the instructor focusing on the learner’s needs, previous experience, and gradually reducing guidance. When sharing knowledge, we should ensure that learning occurs, not just teaching.
